Dogs, Allergies and You
So, everyday it's the same thing. Sneezing, sniffling, runny nose, eye irritations, and even headaches. Maybe a little nausea. What's causing all of these symptoms? You go to the doctor and you're told that you have allergies. Allergies can be very hard to track down. You can go through all kinds of testing and be prescribed different drugs to treat your allergies. These drugs will suppress any symptoms you have been having, however, that may not be the answer to the problem.
Here's where many people come to the conclusion that they are allergic to their dog. Maybe you've had your dog companion for years, but all of a sudden you develope an allergy and perhaps you've been told by a doctor that you are allergic to your pet. Well, maybe, but before you surrender your dog to a shelter, give this some serious thought. Perhaps, you're allergic to all the unseen chemicals that are outgassing into your home from furniture, carpet, drapes, glue in wallpaper, plywood, vinyl flooring, fake wood flooring, glues used in flooring and carpet installations.
Maybe your allergies are caused from all of the food additives, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, and other preservatives in the food you eat and the liquids that you drink, like diet drinks. Do you know how harmful artificial sweetners are? If you use a powdered sweetner in your tea or coffee, you might try switching over to Stevia. It can be found in either powder or liquid. It is a wonderful, natural, herbal sweetner, made from the leaf of the Stevia plant. Look for it in the health food sections of the larger grocery stores or natural food stores.
If you have silver fillings in your teeth or other metals in your mouth like braces or partials made with metals, these could be causing headaches, sinus and other problems. Also, hair and makeup products are filled with dangerous, poisonous chemicals. Natural health food stores carry cosmetics and hair products that are much safer to use than the products that we see in the drug stores. They also carry a fine line of toothpaste and deodorants that are chemical free.
Prescription drugs can also cause drug reactions that seem to be allergy symptoms. If you have your clothes dry cleaned, these chemicals can penetrate into your skin. Have you ever noticed how your dry cleaning has an "aroma"? That's the chemicals.
Your job could be making you sick--seriously, the office could be filled with unseen chemicals circulating in the air conditioning system. Most offices don't have windows to open to air out the stale air.
And another consideration--what's going on in your bed? (Not being personal) There could be and probably are thousands of dust mites reproducing and having a great time in your mattress. These little critters cannot be seen, but they can certainly cause allergies. What can you do? Buy a mattress that is hypoallergenic, something that mites can't set up housekeeping in. Make sure to keep all bedding washed frequently.
So, maybe the problem is that after many years of being exposed to all of these chemicals and irritants in a daily assault on your body, your liver just cannot process and cleanse like it should. And your cells are filled with toxins and your body is telling you that it can't take anymore. Perhaps, it has nothing to do with the family pet. Many people are quick to jump to the conclusion that Fido has to go. Then after they give up their dog, they still have allergies. A local shelter ran an ad just the other day on a family dog that was given up due to allergies. They had the dog for 10 years.
We have to remember that we are exposed daily to hundreds of toxins that cause adverse effects in our bodies. Some of these we cannot control, but we need to learn to control the ones that we can. Like using natural products, eating organic foods that are not saturated with poisonous chemicals. Stop eating preservatives and pay attention to what you drink. Stop saturating your lawn with chemicals so you can have a green lawn. These chemicals are tracked into your home on the soles of your shoes. Also, do you have small children that play in the grass? This is very dangerous for them also, especially if you have little ones that like to eat dirt. Dirt is dirtier today than it was 20 years ago!
These are just some points to consider if you have allergies. There are many, many things that can cause them besides the dear family dog. Do some research on these points and see if you find some relief in the form of not having to take drugs that are just a cover up for the real problem. Find the problem. Look around your home. Then maybe you'll happily realize that you don't need to give away your dog or your cat. The whole family will feel better!
Dental Implant Failure
Dental implant failures are very rare. Dental implant surgery has a success rate of 95%. Failure in surgery is due to improper selection of patients. Implants fail for numerous reasons. They could be biological or microbiological factors, biomechanical factors, biomaterial factors, or due to implant surface treatments. Complications involved in the dental implant procedure are nerve damage, infection, the body's rejection of the implant and the implant itself breaking.
The most widespread cause of dental implant failure is poor oral hygiene. The build-up of dental plaque and debris around teeth and implants results in an increased concentration of bacteria. Good oral hygiene can greatly reduce infection.
Improper selection of patient is another reason for dental implant failure. Patients with sufficient quality or quantity of bone to support the implant fixture only are to be selected for the implant surgery. Otherwise, implants are doomed to be utter failures. Medical history and systematic health of the patient should be clearly checked by the dentist before surgery.
Another possible reason for implant failure is inferior surgical technique. Implant failure may result from insufficient irrigation of the surgical site or from using low torque and excessive drill speed during placement. Failure results from extreme temperature elevation in bone during placement, leading to necrosis of the supporting bone around the implant. Inadequate implant restorations may also contribute to implant failure. Poorly restored implants may have overhangs or be over-contoured, which may lead to plaque buildup and ultimate failure. Another research has shown that smoking can lead to higher rates of dental implant failure.
Smoking is exceptionally harmful to all oral tissues, especially when implants are present. It affects the healing of bone and soft tissue, by reducing the nutrients and minerals in the tissues and by reducing blood supply. To help keep the supporting bone and gum tissues healthy and capable of resisting infection, the implant patient should not smoke.
New Findings on the Role of Glutathione in Cancer
Cancer cells and normal cells are known to respond differently to nutrients and drugs that affect glutathione status.
Numerous studies have shown that tumor cells have elevated levels of glutathione levels, which confers resistance to chemotherapy drugs.
One of the challenges of cancer therapy is how to deplete tumor cells of glutathione, so as to make them more vulnerable to the effects of chemotherapy drugs, while at the same time allowing normal cells to remain relatively unaffected by chemotherapeutic drugs.
A number of new findings have emerged that take into consideration the role of glutathione in pathways that promote programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancer cells.
A German study has reported that glutathione (GSH) plays a critical role in cellular mechanisms that result in cell death. The study found that cancer cells resistant to apoptosis had higher intracellular GSH levels.
Depletion of glutathione in these tumor cells made them more vulnerable to the effects of anticancer drugs or the gene that promotes apoptosis (CD95 or APO-1/Fas). The researchers concluded that apoptosis resistance in tumor cells depends, at least in part, on intracellular GSH levels. (1)
In another study conducted in Spain, researchers found that lowering GSH concentration may be convenient not only for the efficiency of chemotherapy, but also to induce a rather fast and direct apoptosis mechanism in tumor cells. (2)
Based on that premise that the glutathione-S-transferase enzyme is expressed at high levels in many tumors, researchers at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Pennsylvania, went on to design a novel prodrug (PABA/NO).
The glutathione-s-transferase in tumor cells converts PABA/NO to lethal nitric oxide, resulting in death of the tumor cell. The prodrug was shown to have antitumor effects in an animal model for human ovarian cancer. (3)
In the fourth study, Polish researchers found that ingesting a selenium supplement is beneficial, as a supportive element in chemotherapy. (4)
Selenium is a co-factor of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase [GSH-P(x)] and was found to significantly increase the activity of GSH-P(x) in patients reciving the supplement.
A previous clinical study by the same researchers recommended the administration of selenium in patients with ovarian cancer undergoing multi-drug chemotherapy. (5)
Another interesting study by researchers in Texas showed that your chances of surviving a type of brain cancer, called primary malignant glioma, could depend on the type of glutathione-s-transferase (GST) gene you were born with.
Having a combination of a two specific variants of GST (germ-line GSTP1*A/*A and GSTM1 null genotype) confers a survival advantage in some types of brain cancers, but also comes with an increased risk of adverse events related to chemotherapy. (6)
There is compelling evidence to suggest a crucial role for glutathione and substances that target glutathione metabolism in the prevention and treatment of cancer.
Undenatured whey protein is one of the natural foods known to selectively deplete cancer cells of their glutathione, thus making them more susceptible to such cancer treatments as radiation and chemotherapy.
For a complete report on the research on undenatured whey protein and cancer see the report Glutathione (GSH) and Whey Protein in Cancer.

Foods To Avoid When You Are Pregnant
Just as there are certain foods that you should be sure to stock up on, so too are there foods that you should avoid as though they would give you the plague if you were to breathe in their general area if you were pregnant. Of course, this list changes from year to year so take most of these recommendations with a grain of salt!
If you're unsure whether a food is safe for you to eat, or if you have heard mixed reports or have a concern based on your individual circumstances, consult your OB/GYN. Since they are regularly required to take continuing education classes and receive frequent updates from the research fields they would be the most qualified to provide you with information pertaining specifically to your pregnancy.
Alcohol is first on the list of No-No's for Mommies to Be, and with good reason. The amount of alcohol that is safe to consume in a day while pregnant has yet to be determined, and the incidence of known cases of birth defects due to alcohol consumption is on the rise. According to the March of Dimes "alcohol is the most common known cause of damage to developing babies in the United States and is the leading cause of preventable mental retardation."
On a more personal note, alcohol can also aggravate many of the common side effects of pregnancy such as nausea and heartburn. It also takes up space in your stomach that could be filled with more healthy things, like water or juice. If you can forsake alcohol completely during your pregnancy, that would be the best choice for you and your baby. Does that mean that a sip of your glass when you toast your cousin's wedding is going to leave your baby scarred for life? No, probably not. Use your good sense. While a sip or two of wine every now and then probably won't hurt your growing angel, a shot or two of tequila might not be as forgiving. Pregnancy is only nine months long. Your baby lasts a lifetime.
The other scare when it comes to pregnancy eating has come from an unexpected source-fish. Long lauded as the best source of protein for pregnant women, it was recently discovered that fish was also high in mercury, a condition caused by the dumping of waste into the water. Mercury can cause irreparable damage to a fetus's developing nervous system. The debate as to whether specific fish can be considered safe or not is still ongoing, but pregnant women are currently being encouraged to avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, bluefish, tuna steak, striped bass, freshwater fish and canned tuna.
While highly processed foods may not cause permanent damage to your unborn baby they usually contain enough preservatives to qualify them as highly suspicious. Remember, anything that claims to be sugar free yet tastes sweet has some form of sugar substitute in it. The question is, what are they substituting? Labels such as "fat free" and "caffeine free" should also be approached with caution. Take the high road here and attempt to buy whole, natural foods as often as possible. Look at the list of ingredients on the label. The longer it is, the less likely it is to be healthy for your baby.
If you have a hard time getting started in the morning without your cup of Joe, now's going to be the time to learn. Caffeine impedes iron absorption, contributing to anemia in pregnant women who don't have enough to spare, robs the body of precious calcium and aggravates heartburn all in one fell swoop. It also transfers to your baby through your breast milk, which means that if you like to drink coffee and you're planning on breastfeeding you can expect a lot of late nights.
Although you could switch to decaf, for the dedicated coffee drinker this is about the equivalent of taking a perfectly good cup of coffee and filling it 2/3 full of water. As a placebo it's a poor substitute. Instead, try a cup of hot chocolate or apple cider in the morning. (Heating apple juice and adding a little cinnamon works too.) The hot beverage will hit a few of the "wake up" buttons that coffee triggers, and while you'll probably feel the lack of caffeine for the first week or two you should find that getting through the day gets easier-and hey, pregnant women are supposed to nap regularly anyway!
Unpasteurized cheeses, soft or fresh cheeses such as Brie, deli meats, hot dogs, undercooked eggs, fish, rare to medium well meats and unpasteurized juices are also being added at various intervals to the "no-no" list that OB/GYNs are handing out to their patients in an attempt to stop the spread of pathogens such as E.coli, Salmonella and Listeria, all of which are often present in undercooked or uncooked meats.
Listeria, the leading cause of meningitis in children less than one year old, has the ability to cross the placenta and infect the baby. It can also cause miscarriage. Salmonella has been associated with stillbirth. Even if fetal death doesn't occur, dehydration from the diarrhea and vomiting that accompany Salmonella infection is a serious risk. A severe infection with E. coli can cause dehydration as well as potentially triggering premature labor or miscarriage.
By the same token, it is vitally important that you wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly before you eat them, particularly if you grow your own. You were probably told by your physician that while you were pregnant you shouldn't handle kitty litter due to a potential infection with Toxoplasma, a parasite that lives in cat feces. Toxoplasma is also present in the soil, particularly in areas where cats often roam and do their business outside. There is always a risk of Toxoplasma appearing in commercially processed foods, although it is less common than in home grown.
It is better to be safe than sorry when dealing with Toxoplasma. The parasite can cross the placenta, infecting the baby and causing stillbirth or long term damage. There is a 15% chance of the parasite infecting the baby if exposure occurs in the first trimester, 30% in the second and 60% in the third.
Pathogenic infection of the developing fetus can be potentially devastating, particularly when it is caused by an invader that an adult immune system would be able to battle off with ease. It is far better to take the time to carefully ensure that your food is pathogen free during pregnancy than to have to live with the consequences.
