A Complex Ovarian Cyst Does Not Always Mean Cancer

A complex ovarian cyst is simply a cyst that is composed of more than one type of material. Most cysts are simply fluid filled sacs. A complex cyst, on the other hand, is made of both solid and liquid materials. In some cases, the cyst may also be septated, which means that the different sections are divided by a septum or wall.

Types of Complex Ovarian Cysts

There are several different types of complex ovarian cysts. The dermoid cyst, for example, is nonmalignant, and created when an unfertilized egg starts to divide in the ovary. This cyst is generally filled with things like hair, fingernails, teeth, or pieces of bone. It doesn't generally cause problems unless it is large. The only way to get rid of a dermoid cyst is surgical removal.

Another type of complex cyst is the cystadenoma. This is a rare form of cyst composed of mucus and liquid. It is not cancerous, but can become dangerous if it gets too large. In some cases, cystadenomas of up to 20 pounds have been removed! Cystadenomas are removed surgically if they get overly large. However, this type of cyst may be able to be dissolved using natural remedies.

Endometrial cysts are another type of complex ovarian cyst. When endometrial tissue migrates out of the uterus, it can attach to other areas in the abdomen, including the ovaries. Then, when your hormones signal your uterus to shed its lining, these cyst also start bleeding. This can cause pain every month. Sometimes these are treated by surgery, but this is not always successful, as some endometrial cells may be left behind to continue the problem.

Treatment of Complex Ovarian Cysts

Occasionally, functional cysts can become septated and be considered a complex ovarian cyst. Generally, the doctor will want to do a biopsy to see if it's cancerous. You can request additional tests before going under the knife, however. One such test is the CA-125 blood test. It measures the amount of CA-125 found in your blood, a marker found in women with ovarian cancer. You can also try to shrink the cyst with natural methods before considering surgery. If the cyst doesn't respond, surgery may be required.

Natural methods to treat ovarian cysts consist of cleansing the body, through herbal teas and drinking plenty of filtered water. Afterwards, you would follow a diet based on healthy whole organic foods. You can also look into Chinese herbal treatments.
