Panic Attack Treatments That Offer Immediate Relief

Panic attack treatments deal with the body's reaction of extreme fear to an external set of stimuli. Many times panic attacks begin for no apparent reason. In some cases they are triggered by an illness, certain medications, pregnancy or a major life stress such as the loss of a loved one, a serious accident, abuse or rape. There are a variety of treatments that can help the person find relief.

Many doctors prescribe antidepressants or other types of medication to patients who suffer from panic attacks. These medications work to some degree, but do not cure the problem. As with any type of medicine, they can cause serious side effects. You will want to discuss this possibility with your doctor before deciding to use this method. During pregnancy, it is not possible to use any type of medication.

Using relaxation techniques when you feel an attack coming on will often stop the attack before it becomes serious. Begin by consciously relaxing your shoulders. Then tighten each group of large muscles as you breathe in deeply, hold your breath for a few seconds. Relax the muscles and exhale slowly. Slow down your breathing by blowing out the air instead of just exhaling.

Two of the greatest fears a person experiences in a panic attack is that they are going crazy and that they cannot breathe. Talk to yourself and tell yourself that you are not going crazy, that the attack will pass and that you will be okay. If you feel like you can't breathe, remember that if you are able to talk, you can breathe.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is another effective way to deal with panic attacks. This therapy tries to help the patient identify the irrational thoughts and behaviors that cause the panic symptoms. The therapist will attempt to gradually expose the patient to different situations that bring on his attacks, and if they are situations that are fabricated in his mind, he will help him understand that those things will not hurt him. If the attacks are caused from terrible past experiences the therapist tries to help the patient see that what happened is in the past and that it is no longer hurting him.

Diet is, also, an important factor in the lives of people who suffer from panic attacks. White sugar, caffeine, alcohol and drugs can actually make the attacks worse.

Panic attacks are a terrifying experience for those who suffer from them. The fear they cause affects every area of the person's life. Every patient's goal is to find relief in one of the panic attack treatments that are available.
